Laurel Elementary School

Summary:

Laurel Elementary School is a public elementary school in Fort Collins, Colorado, serving 464 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Poudre School District R-1, which is ranked 11th out of 116 districts in Colorado and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Laurel Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with higher percentages of Hispanic and multi-racial students, the school consistently underperforms on state assessments. In 2023-2024, only 34.6% of Laurel students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 59.3% for the district and 44.1% for the state. Laurel also ranks lower for specific student groups, such as male students, white students, and low socioeconomic status students, compared to other Colorado elementary schools. The school's free and reduced-price lunch rate of 49.14% in 2022-2023 is higher than nearby schools, and its student-teacher ratio of 14.3 is lower, which may indicate more individualized attention for students.

Laurel Elementary's statewide ranking has steadily declined over the past several years, from 540th out of 914 Colorado elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 569th out of 943 in 2023-2024, with a consistent 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Despite being located in the same district, Laurel's performance lags behind nearby schools like Tavelli Elementary, O'Dea Elementary, and Shepardson Elementary, which consistently rank in the top 25% of Colorado elementary schools. Addressing the achievement gaps for specific student groups and understanding the underlying factors that contribute to Laurel's underperformance should be a priority for the school and district leadership.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We love Laurel Elementary! Our children are being taught and nurtured in a diverse school that focuses on the arts and technology. Laurel's strings program is top-notch and students can begin playing the violin as early as kindergarten. When we needed a different house, we made sure to find a home in the neighborhood so that our children could continue at Laurel. The teachers really care, and administration is responsive to our needs. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
