Grand Peak Academy

Summary:

Grand Peak Academy is a public charter elementary and middle school serving 596 students in grades K-8 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which is part of the El Paso County Colorado School District 49.

While Grand Peak Academy has a higher percentage of White students (56.04%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 48.47% to 65.18%, the school's overall academic performance is lower than the district and state averages across English Language Arts, Math, and Science. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's overall ELA proficiency was 37.4% compared to the district's 45.9% and the state's 44.1%. However, the school's performance for Hispanic students is relatively stronger, ranking 135 out of 242 Colorado elementary schools in 2023-2024, with a 4-star rating. Additionally, the school's performance for low socioeconomic status students is better, ranking in the top half of Colorado elementary schools, despite having a lower percentage of free and reduced lunch recipients (19.97%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 6.98% to 35.84%.

One potential factor in Grand Peak Academy's academic struggles may be its higher student-teacher ratio (17.5 in 2022-2023) compared to the nearby schools, which range from 13.3 to 24.8. This could impact the level of individualized attention and support provided to students. Despite these challenges, the school's stronger performance for Hispanic students and lower free and reduced lunch rates suggest potential areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Warning! Danger! From a present and involved parent. I have always been heavily involved in all of my children's schools. I have also worked in/with many schools for over 15 years. I have never seen anything quite like this.

- This is not a safe place for children. They have a group of middle schoolers eating in the janitor's closet because they are bullied. The Dean of students won't send her own daughter to the school.

A middle school student was beaten and hospitalized. The family refused to send their student back until the school addressed the situation, and took action to protect their student. The school responded with the threat of truancy action and insisted on the student returning to school the day after being released from the hospital. The Dean of students has been seen dragging a student down the hallway. Teachers have been seen putting their hands on students to the point of leaving bruises. The principal fired her son's kindergarten teacher the last week of school, and the explanation was generic. It was obviously a rash decision. Their entire 4th-grade staff quit last year. Last year alone they lost over a dozen good teachers. This just barely touches on the issues at this school. Please if you love your children to not subject them to this environment. Close Quote

Open Quote My children have been attending GPA for 7+ years and have thrived in the culture of the school. I feel that the academics are top notch and the teachers and administration operate with the kids best interests in mind. Ms. Aiken & Mr. Mery have been stand out teachers for us. We love GPA! Open Quote I love this school, the teachers are caring and very knowledgeable. Teachers work very hard everyday to meets the needs of the kids. One thing I love best is how the staff always to trying to help students as a whole child. The school actively teaches the kids how to work through conflicts, not just let them figure it out. I love the rigorous academics of the school and how the kids are challenged to view and see new things. My kid has been going to this school for 3 years and I have nothing but pride for all the hard work this school staff does and the the awesomeness of the families and students that attend. #proudtobeabear Close Quote

Open Quote This school is terrible. They are constantly firing teachers and other staff members left and right. They also dont follow IEP'S and 504's and do everything in their power to hide it. The kids at the school run the show not the adults. I would not recommend this school to anyone. Close Quote

Open Quote Neglected several students.
Support bullying as they take a look away approach.
Sexual misconduct on students by peers is tolerated as blind eyes are turned.
504 and IEP PLANS are violated and not enforced or followed .
Homework is 3-4 hours per student a night. While in class many teachers sick kids in front of computer screens and or projection screens to avoid teaching. Close Quote

Open Quote I have a friend who's child used to go to this school. The school was beautiful and close to their house. After this wonderful child had been there for 2 weeks her personality change and she would cry when she had to go. Long story short, they found out that the teacher would yell at them all day while slamming doors and getting in their faces. Did I mention that this was kindergarten? After this was addressed to the principal he did nothing after she admitted it. I hope our friend's daughter doesn't remember this and am definitely glad she is not there anymore. Close Quote

Open Quote I would definitely not recommend this school to anyone? There are a lot of wonderful teachers, and some not so wonderful. The problem is the Principal and Vice Principal. The school is ran like a business, because that is exactly what it is. There is no oversight in place, so nobody is holding them accountable. If you speak up, they push you out. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
