Durango Big Picture High School

Summary:

Durango Big Picture High School is a small public high school in Durango, Colorado, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of just 86 as of the 2022-2023 school year. While the Durango School District No. 9-R is ranked 30 out of 116 school districts in Colorado, Durango Big Picture High School faces some unique challenges compared to nearby high schools.

The school has a higher percentage of Hispanic and Native American students compared to Durango High School, but consistently underperforms the district and state in standardized test scores. For example, only 53% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in SAT Reading and Writing, compared to 74% for the district and 58% for Colorado. The school also struggles in mathematics, with just 17% of 10th-grade students proficient or better in PSAT10 Mathematics, versus 35% for the district and 34% for the state. Additionally, Durango Big Picture High School has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 21.43% to 35.62% over the past three years, compared to 20.09% at Durango High School.

Despite these challenges, Durango Big Picture High School's small size and lower student-teacher ratio, ranging from 11.6 to 20.9 over the past three years, could present opportunities for the school to better support its diverse student population and close the achievement gap with surrounding schools like Ignacio High School, Bayfield High School, and Durango High School. By leveraging its personalized learning approach and dedicated staff, Durango Big Picture High School may be able to improve student outcomes and better serve the needs of its community.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
