Cole Arts and Science Academy

Summary:

Cole Arts and Science Academy is an elementary school in Denver, Colorado, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of School District No. 1. The school has a predominantly Hispanic student population and faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Colorado.

Cole Arts and Science Academy's academic performance is a major concern, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math that are far below the district and state averages. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 13.1% of students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 40.7% in the district and 44.1% statewide. In Math, the proficiency rate was just 10%, compared to 31.2% in the district and 34.2% statewide. This low performance has been a persistent issue for the school over the years. The school's high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 87.45% to 88.61%, suggests that economic disadvantage may be a contributing factor to the academic challenges.

While the nearby schools, such as Whittier Ece-8 School, International Academy of Denver at Harrington, and Columbine Elementary School, also struggle with low academic performance, some schools in the area, like Polaris Elementary School and Downtown Denver Expeditionary School, have significantly higher academic achievement. This suggests that there may be opportunities for improvement at Cole Arts and Science Academy through targeted interventions and resource allocation.

Open Quote I live near C.A.S.A. and have been watching the incredible growth since the school was re-opened in August 2008. They have done a great job at letting us in the community know about the growth they are seeing and the ways they are fighting for the students who aren't yet on grade level. This is the school's third year now (2010-11) and they are a trusted educational institute in this neighborhood. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
