Dora Moore Ece-8 School

Summary:

Dora Moore Ece-8 School is a public elementary and middle school in Denver, Colorado, serving 316 students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. The school stands out for its diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is more varied than some nearby schools, but its academic performance lags behind district and state averages.

Dora Moore Ece-8 School's student body is 32.28% White, 20.25% African American, 35.44% Hispanic, 0.32% Asian, 0.95% Native American, and 10.76% two or more races. This diversity is higher than at Teller Elementary School and Bromwell Elementary School, which have a larger percentage of White students. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by CMAS test scores, is significantly lower than the School District No. 1 and state averages, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math well below the district and state levels.

Dora Moore Ece-8 School also has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 14.3 to 18.6 students per teacher, and a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, between 61.71% and 63.06% over the past three years. These factors suggest that the school's challenges may be unique, as nearby schools like Teller Elementary School and Bromwell Elementary School have significantly higher test scores and school rankings. Addressing the school's performance issues may require a multifaceted approach to support student success.

Open Quote My child has attended Dora Moore for 6 years and our experience has been very positive. The school's teachers are very strong and provide rigorous instruction. The school had a change in administration 2 years ago and since that time the new administrators have been consistently building a supportive environment that addresses the needs of the whole child. A growing number of parents are strongly committed to the school and both neighborhood families and choice-in families are passionate about the school community. The diverse student population is valued and supported and the faculty makes great efforts to provide an inclusive environment. In addition to the strong academic instruction, students are provided with a rotating schedule of "essentials" which include gym, art, music, and technology, and the school provides a variety of free, teacher-led after-school programs. My child feels at home at Dora Moore and I am impressed at the level of support she has received in developing leadership skills. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
