Edison Elementary School

Summary:

Edison Elementary School is a public elementary school in Colorado Springs, Colorado, serving 263 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Colorado Springs School District No. 11, which is ranked 66 out of 116 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Edison Elementary stands out for its significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (49.43%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 9.52% to 41.52% Hispanic. However, the school consistently underperforms the district and state in academic achievement, with only 21.9% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 37.5% in the district and 44.1% statewide. Additionally, Edison has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 72.48% to 76.81% over the past three years, much higher than the surrounding schools. The school's statewide ranking has also declined over the past several years, from 481 out of 965 Colorado elementary schools in 2018-2019 to 680 out of 943 in 2023-2024, with a consistent 1- or 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Nearby schools, such as Steele Elementary School and Stratton Elementary School, significantly outperform Edison Elementary in academic achievement, with much higher CMAS proficiency rates and higher statewide rankings. This suggests that the challenges faced by Edison Elementary may be unique to the school and not necessarily shared by all schools in the district. The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Edison Elementary may be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance, and further investigation and targeted interventions may be necessary to address these issues and improve the educational outcomes for students at the school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My kids have been attending this school for 3 years now and while there are a handful of teachers that are great, it is the exception not the rule.
There is a general lack of caring when students get bullied.
My kids have not gotten a lunch break more times than I can count.
They pair grades together now (1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th etc) due to budget cuts which has not created an improvement.
I'm not very happy with this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
