Plateau Valley Elementary School

Summary:

Plateau Valley Elementary School is a public elementary school in Collbran, Colorado, serving 152 students in grades PK-6 as part of the Plateau Valley School District No. 50. While the school has some strengths, such as a low student-teacher ratio, it faces challenges in maintaining consistent academic performance compared to the state and nearby schools.

Plateau Valley Elementary School stands out for its predominantly white student population, with over 92% of students identifying as white. This is significantly higher than the more diverse student bodies at nearby schools like Grand Valley Center for Family Learning and Bea Underwood Elementary School, which have higher percentages of Hispanic students. Additionally, Plateau Valley has a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, suggesting it serves a more affluent community compared to its neighbors.

Academically, Plateau Valley Elementary School has shown mixed performance, with some areas where it outperforms the state, such as 5th-grade science proficiency, and others where it lags behind, like overall math proficiency. The school's statewide ranking has also fluctuated significantly over the years, ranging from 361 to 729 out of over 900 Colorado elementary schools. This inconsistency in academic achievement could indicate the need for the school and the broader Plateau Valley School District No. 50 to explore opportunities for collaboration and sharing of best practices with the more diverse and higher-performing nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Small town school. Appears to be where teachers and administrators go when they can't make it in school district 51. They don't fire bad teachers, they just move them to different classes. Typical small town atmosphere where local gossip is perpetuated throughout the school. School board is made up of local people, so in a town this small the board is naive with regard to methods of making the school better. Facilities are nice, but more investment in competent teachers would be a better use of school resources. Avoid this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
