Sagebrush Elementary School

Summary:

Sagebrush Elementary School is a public elementary school in Aurora, Colorado, serving 417 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Cherry Creek School District No. 5, which is ranked 28 out of 116 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Despite being part of a highly-ranked district, Sagebrush Elementary consistently underperforms academically compared to the district and state averages. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 28% of Sagebrush students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 48.3% for the district and 44.1% for the state. In math, just 23.5% of Sagebrush students were proficient, compared to 40.8% for the district and 34.2% for the state. This underperformance may be linked to the school's relatively high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 48.92% receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Sagebrush's diverse student population, with 44.36% White, 14.15% African American, 29.02% Hispanic, 4.56% Asian, and 7.43% two or more races, is not reflected in its academic performance, as the school's rankings for specific subgroups are consistently low compared to other Colorado schools.

When compared to nearby schools within the Cherry Creek School District, Sagebrush Elementary stands out as an outlier in terms of academic performance. For example, Trails West Elementary School, located just 2.25 miles away, consistently ranks in the top 25% of Colorado elementary schools and outperforms Sagebrush across all academic measures. Sagebrush's performance has also been declining over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 437 out of 929 Colorado elementary schools in 2016-2017 to 718 out of 943 in 2023-2024, indicating the need for significant interventions to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is school flat out lies about the teacher to student ratio. They include ALL staff, even the ones that never watch children, to get that ratio. The truth is they have 30+ kids in these classes, not 16. Cherry Creek is fantastic at deception though. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
