Vanguard Classical School - West

Summary:

Vanguard Classical School - West is a public charter elementary and middle school in Denver, Colorado, serving students from kindergarten through 8th grade. With a diverse student population, the school has a majority Hispanic student body (63.36% in 2022-2023) and is part of the Aurora Joint District No. 28, which is ranked 107 out of 116 districts in Colorado and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Vanguard Classical School - West consistently performs below the state and Aurora district averages on CMAS assessments, with only 22.1% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and just 8.4% in Math for the 2023-2024 school year. The school's performance has been declining over the years, dropping from a statewide ranking of 698 out of 954 Colorado elementary schools in 2012-2013 to 865 out of 943 in 2023-2024. The school's low performance is particularly concerning for female students, Hispanic students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, who rank in the bottom 10-20% of Colorado elementary schools.

While Vanguard Classical School - West struggles academically, the nearby Aurora Academy Charter School outperforms the school and other local public schools, ranking in the top 50% of Colorado elementary schools. This suggests that the high proportion of students from low-income families at Vanguard Classical School - West and the surrounding schools may be a significant contributor to their low academic performance, and addressing these socioeconomic challenges could be a key focus for improving student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Great education model, and the teacher/student ratio is low and therefore students get a lot attention. I really like the Classical Model, Singapore Math and Riggs Reading program. My kids came from a DPS school and we've been happy every year. if you live near the school I would recommend checking the school out and consider attending even if you have to choice in. With the new K-12 school opening, there will be several openings in the K-8 Lowry Campus school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
