Mountain Song Community School

Summary:

Mountain Song Community School is a public charter elementary school serving 326 students in grades K-8 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with a predominantly White (63.8%) student population and significant Hispanic (23.01%) and two or more races (9.82%) representation.

While Mountain Song Community School has a relatively low student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools, its academic performance has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Colorado elementary schools over the past 8 years. The school's proficiency rates on CMAS tests are below the state and district averages across most grade levels and subject areas, particularly in 3rd grade ELA (12.5% proficient) and 6th grade Math (25% proficient). Nearby schools, such as Manitou Springs Elementary, Steele Elementary, and Gold Camp Elementary, generally outperform Mountain Song Community School on academic measures, with higher proficiency rates in ELA and Math.

While Mountain Song Community School has a more diverse student population compared to some of the nearby schools, its academic performance does not seem to be significantly better than the less diverse schools. For example, Steele Elementary, which has a student body that is 78.97% White, outperforms Mountain Song on most academic measures. As a public charter school, Mountain Song Community School may have more flexibility in its curriculum and teaching methods, but this does not appear to translate into significantly better academic outcomes for the students when compared to the traditional public schools in the Manitou Springs School District No. 14 and Colorado Springs School District No. 11.

Open Quote My child suffered from attending this school. Emotionally and academically. Most the staff are not actual teachers and have little training and support and cannot handle the large class sizes and challenges with high needs students. All the students suffer as a result. Close Quote

Open Quote Absolutely the worst choice you could ever make for your children if you care about their education. Horrendous. Just ask to see their unified improvement plan. Test scores are in the toilet for all grades. And that’s not a “well we’re a Waldorf school” problem. That’s a systemic school issue that is failing to give these children a proper education. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
