Sierra Vista Elementary

Summary:

Sierra Vista Elementary is a public elementary school in Perris, California, serving 886 students in grades K-6 as part of the Val Verde Unified School District. The school has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, with rates rising from 7.5% in 2017-2018 to 32.9% in 2022-2023, notably higher than the district average of 44.9% at nearby Val Verde Elementary.

Academically, Sierra Vista Elementary's performance lags behind the state average, with proficiency rates ranging from 24.14% to 48.26% in English Language Arts/Literacy, 8.57% to 29.76% in Mathematics, and only 20.75% in Science. The school's performance varies across different student subgroups, with African American and English Language Learner students performing relatively better, while female, Hispanic, students with disabilities, and low-socioeconomic status students perform below average. Sierra Vista Elementary's high rates of free and reduced-price lunch, ranging from 81.06% to 85.33%, indicate a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Compared to nearby schools like Val Verde Elementary, May Ranch Elementary, and Avalon Elementary, Sierra Vista Elementary's performance is generally lower, with higher chronic absenteeism rates and lower academic achievement. Addressing these challenges and implementing targeted interventions to support underperforming student groups could be crucial for Sierra Vista Elementary to improve its standing and provide a better educational experience for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is incompetent. Now that Mr. Warren left, it is not the same. The new principal does not know how to effectively do her job. She makes excuses for disobedient kids that bully others and unprofessional staff members. She makes contradictory statements as well. No wonder this district has been investigated by the state for this incompetence. It clearly reflects in her leadership. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
