Atherwood Elementary

Summary:

Atherwood Elementary is a public elementary school in Simi Valley, California, serving 502 students in grades K-6. The school is part of the Simi Valley Unified School District, which is ranked 667 out of 1,568 districts in the state.

Atherwood Elementary has seen fluctuating statewide rankings, ranging from 335 out of 1,417 schools in 2020-2021 to 2,318 out of 5,862 schools in 2023-2024. The school's performance varies among different student groups, with female students outperforming males in English Language Arts, but Hispanic, White, special education, and low-income students performing lower than their peers. Chronic absenteeism has also been a significant issue, increasing from 4.2% in 2017-2018 to 19.0% in 2022-2023. Atherwood's proficiency rates in Smarter Balanced Assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics are generally lower than the district and state averages, particularly in the upper grade levels.

Compared to nearby Hollow Hills Elementary and Vista Elementary, Atherwood's performance is generally lower, with lower statewide rankings and test scores. This may be influenced by Atherwood's higher proportion of students from low-income families, as well as a higher student-teacher ratio compared to the nearby schools in the district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am disgusted with this School. I have never seen such poor judgment. First off they have no crossing guards. The traffic is horrible with drop off and pick up. I was told the parents voted against a cross guard or traffic control, as a parent I do not remember voting for any such thing. This is very dangerous. The teacher I have is a complete scatter brain, very unorganized, with no structure. At first I thought it was just me, then I was talking with other parents who said the same. I had turned in my volunteer form, at the start of school, I ended up turning in 3 of them, for the school to turn around and tell me.. Oh we found your original one. The teacher tells me my kid is missing assignments, I was completely dumb founded to find the assignments in the class room. So this is very disturbing to me, when I am told my child is doing well, to see the grades have gone down 1/2 a score.
Now for the principal, I get a message from my child ... had to change their shoes... of course no other kid has had to, as I have observed the sandals on others plenty of times, and no PE what difference does it make. I take the shoes up to go back and give them to my kid, for the principal to say here I will take them back, there is Star Testing Make up going on and you will interrupt the class... WHAT.. and you wont? What difference does it make... he is a bit of a power player. I would not recommend this school... I dont even want to start on the fact that most kids who are enrolled travel from other areas, I thought there were boundary's. The PTA is worthless as well, they have out of boundary people doing the PTA. This school says it is a closed campus when in fact I have seen the campus open with the gardeners being there in the mornings when the kids are getting there. This is also unacceptable.... anyone can get on this campus. I have never seen such a poorly run school, and if you tell them they take it very personable and attack you and make excuses. I hope this helps some of you. I hope they get a new principal, they surely need one. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
