Scott Lane Elementary

Summary:

Scott Lane Elementary is a public elementary school in Santa Clara, California, serving 396 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Santa Clara Unified School District, which is ranked 406 out of 1,568 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Scott Lane Elementary is part of a generally well-performing district, the school itself faces significant challenges. It has consistently higher chronic absenteeism rates compared to nearby schools, with a rate of 29.8% in the 2022-2023 school year, much higher than the 12.9% to 26.5% range of its neighbors. Academically, the school also underperforms, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics that are significantly lower than district and state averages, particularly in 5th grade. This underperformance is likely exacerbated by the school's high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 71.21% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, far exceeding the 7.72% to 64.66% range of nearby schools.

The data suggests that Scott Lane Elementary has been facing persistent challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of California elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for several years. Nearby schools like Briarwood Elementary, Pomeroy Elementary, and Westwood Elementary generally outperform Scott Lane across various metrics, suggesting that there may be opportunities to learn from their practices and strategies to improve the school's performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote No academic progress, still at even lower grade level. My son focusing on survival. my son has been bullied since the begin. of school year after he told on the kid who threatened to choke him many times but nothing was done. I sent dozens of email/phone call correspondence with details to the nature of the abuse my son was going thru but received NO SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM. I copied everyone including board of trustees through out the WHOLE YEAR and NOT ONE OF THEM CARED ABOUT MY SON..He's been followed home and kicked his private area, chased by kids at school getting called these nutz, these balls, b word, f word, all sort of fat names. He's been hit by kids with balls some days 5 balls at one time by different kids and the staff said it was accidental. the lunch staff had even deprived him of lunch saying they had nothing left but nutrition program director did take care of that one, he was picked on by male janitor ,
Every day my son did not want to attend school, crying and bitter. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
