Edendale Middle

Summary:

Edendale Middle is a public middle school located in San Lorenzo, California, serving around 500 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the San Lorenzo Unified School District, which is ranked 1186 out of 1568 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Edendale Middle has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of California middle schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school significantly underperforms compared to the district and state in standardized test scores, with only 16.13% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy and just 3.7% proficient in mathematics. Edendale Middle also struggles with high chronic absenteeism, which has risen from 9.5% in 2018-2019 to 33.8% in 2022-2023. The school's performance is particularly concerning for African American, Hispanic, English Language Learner, and low-socioeconomic status students, who rank in the bottom 25% of California middle schools.

While Edendale Middle's challenges are significant, there may be opportunities for improvement. The school's performance is notably lower than nearby Bohannon Middle and Washington Manor Middle, which are also part of the San Lorenzo Unified School District. This suggests that the issues at Edendale Middle may be specific to the school and not solely due to district-level factors. By addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism, providing additional academic and social-emotional support, and learning from the successes of higher-performing nearby schools, Edendale Middle may be able to improve student outcomes and provide a more equitable educational experience for its community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Unfortunately my daughter got stuck to this school. This is the worst school ever. Their teaching skills are poor and personal appearance is not appropriate for a school environment. This may not be a high level professional school but please “dress for success” and let our kids follow that example. We should all practice what we preach! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
