Schallenberger Elementary

Summary:

Schallenberger Elementary is a public elementary school in San Jose, California, serving 477 students in grades K-5 and part of the San Jose Unified School District. This school consistently outperforms the district and state in academic achievement, with strong test scores across various subjects and grade levels. However, the school faces challenges with increasing chronic absenteeism and performance gaps for certain student subgroups.

Schallenberger Elementary's academic performance is a standout, with 61.26% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy, compared to 49.53% for the district and 47.04% for the state. In Mathematics, the school's proficiency rate is 58.56%, while the district and state have 40.86% and 35.54%, respectively. The school performs particularly well for White and multi-racial students, ranking 653 out of 2,647 and 222 out of 669 California elementary schools, respectively, in these subgroups. However, the school struggles with lower rankings and ratings for Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Compared to nearby schools, Schallenberger Elementary generally outperforms Ernesto Galarza Elementary and Terrell Elementary, which are also part of the San Jose Unified School District. However, it lags behind the higher-performing Hammer Montessori at Galarza Elementary, Hacienda Science/Environmental Magnet, Booksin Elementary, and Reed Elementary. This may be due in part to Schallenberger's relatively low percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients (20.55%) compared to some of the neighboring schools, suggesting a more affluent student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote With the addition of Principle Chamberlin, the school has become a much brighter place. We started with the previous Principle who just appeared to be going through the motions until retirement. The school feels rejuvinated and refreshed all thanks to the new principle. Loving it now. Just wish class sizes where a tad smaller but that appears to be the norm in most public schools these days. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
