Williams Elementary

Summary:

Williams Elementary is a public elementary school located in San Jose, California, serving 550 students in grades K-5. It is part of the San Jose Unified School District, which is ranked 796 out of 1,568 districts in the state.

Williams Elementary stands out as an exceptional school, consistently ranking among the top 5% of elementary schools in California, with 80-90% proficiency in English Language Arts, 70-90% proficiency in Mathematics, and 70-85% proficiency in Science across grade levels. The school's student-teacher ratio is lower than the district average, and it maintains very low chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 0.8% to 6.5% in recent years. In contrast, nearby schools like Allen at Steinbeck, Los Alamitos Elementary, and Graystone Elementary have significantly lower proficiency rates and higher chronic absenteeism, despite being part of the same school district.

The stark contrast in performance between Williams Elementary and the surrounding schools, as well as schools in the neighboring Oak Grove Elementary School District, highlights the importance of equitable access to high-quality education. Williams Elementary's success can be attributed to its highly engaged student population, effective teaching practices, and supportive community, which serve as a model for addressing the achievement gap and ensuring all students have the opportunity to thrive academically.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We moved to this school neighborhood based on our agent recommendation (our main criteria were schools and budget). However, we had quite a real culture shock when we started school. Our previous school never asked for donations as aggressive as this school.
Minimum donation of hundreds of dollars per child per year was very strongly requested at the beginning of school. There were also other multiple donation requests that go over a a hundred per student...for teachers to buy classroom supplies, for room parents to buy crafts and party supplies etc. There are at least 4 parties planned per year! These donations do not include food and some items.
Apparently for some reasons, the school does not get enough funding from the substantial property taxes..to fund PE, music, science etc.
Parents and students are pressurized to donate. A parent was "shamed" by other parents and teacher, because he did not donate as much as requested, through emails and teacher talking to parent about it in front of other parents and the class of students themselves. The affected child apparently heard the loud conversation and asked the parent at home. This is quite a culture to experience.
So, I am just saying this openly to prepare any parents who are thinking of moving to this neighborhood based on school etc. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
