Lakeshore Alternative Elementary is a public elementary school in San Francisco, California, serving 402 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the San Francisco Unified School District, which is ranked 651 out of 1,568 districts in the state.

Lakeshore Alternative Elementary's academic performance, as measured by Smarter Balanced Assessments, is generally lower than the district and state averages across various grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy at the end-of-course level was 41.85% for Lakeshore Alternative, compared to 53.73% for the San Francisco Unified School District and 47.04% for California. The school has also experienced relatively high chronic absenteeism rates in recent years, ranging from 13.9% to 34.4%, which are significantly higher than the district and state averages. Additionally, Lakeshore Alternative's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with some subgroups, such as White students and English Language Learners, performing relatively well, while others, such as Asian students, Hispanic students, and Multi-racial students, performing significantly below the state averages.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Sunset Elementary, Lawton Alternative, and Ulloa Elementary, Lakeshore Alternative Elementary's academic performance is generally lower, with significantly higher proficiency rates in both English Language Arts and Mathematics. These nearby schools also have lower chronic absenteeism rates and a lower percentage of students eligible for free and reduced-price lunch, suggesting that Lakeshore Alternative Elementary may face unique challenges in serving its student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My grandson will be starting first grade here this year and he really loves this school..I taught for forty years in the school district. I am in and out of many schools now because I sub. This school is unbelievable. It is calm, the atmosphere is fantastic, and everyone that works here seems genuinely happy and focused. When you walk into the classrooms, you see students who are engaged and often involved in hands-on activities. The principal is as good as it gets, and he is truly supportive of his staff, which explains why the teachers are happy. I volunteer here which,by the way,is really encouraged, so I see what is happening first hand. This is also one of the most diverse schools that I have ever been in and it really benefits the students. Who you do your learning with is more important than what you learn. When you are learning the way these students are, and it is occurring in the midst of this diverse atmosphere, you have entered a realm which most schools are trying to create, but unfortunately fall far short. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
