Serra (Junipero) Elementary

Summary:

Serra (Junipero) Elementary is a public elementary school in San Francisco, California, serving 253 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the San Francisco Unified School District, which is ranked 651 out of 1,568 districts in the state.

Serra (Junipero) Elementary faces several key challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates, low academic performance, and a high percentage of students from low-income families. The school's chronic absenteeism rate has risen significantly from 18.7% in 2017-2018 to 52.9% in 2021-2022, notably higher than the district average of 25.1%. Academically, the school's performance on the Smarter Balanced Assessments is significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 35.51% of Serra (Junipero) Elementary students were proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy, compared to 53.73% in the San Francisco Unified School District and 47.04% statewide. The school also has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, reaching 69.96% in 2022-2023, higher than the district average and several nearby schools like Hillcrest Elementary (84.23%) and Taylor (Edward R.) Elementary (83.87%).

The school's declining performance and ranking are also concerning. Serra (Junipero) Elementary's statewide ranking has steadily declined over the past decade, from a high of 2,261 out of 5,614 California elementary schools in 2015-2016 to a low of 4,714 out of 5,883 in 2021-2022. While the school is located in the same district as nearby schools, its academic performance is generally lower, and its chronic absenteeism rates are significantly higher, suggesting that the school may face unique challenges or have different student demographics that contribute to its underperformance compared to its neighbors.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love this school!! My daughter has been in attendance here since kinder. I had a wonderful relationship with her teacher Mrs.Applin she's a great teacher for getting young ones over the transition of starting school. As my daughter started 1st grade her teacher Mrs.Hong( another one of J.Serras wonderful teachers) was warm and friendly and quickly became a smiling inspiration to her students. Not to say the least about anyone on their staff but they are under the always smiling but watchful eye of their principal Ms.Cheung who is fun and energetic and knows all of the students by first name. Well I can go on and on but I just thought to give credit where credit is due.

P.S. "The kids are also GREAT!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
