Juarez Elementary

Summary:

Juarez Elementary is a public elementary school in San Diego, California, serving 203 students in grades K-5. The school faces several challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates, lower-than-average test scores, and a relatively high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Juarez Elementary's chronic absenteeism rates have risen significantly, from 12.5% in 2017-2018 to 33.5% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the San Diego Unified School District and California state averages. The school's test scores in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science are consistently lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 37.97% of Juarez Elementary students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 54.22% for the district and 47.04% for the state. In Mathematics, Juarez Elementary's proficiency rate was 36.36%, while the district and state had 43.89% and 35.54%, respectively.

Interestingly, Juarez Elementary's Hispanic students and low socioeconomic status students have shown more promising performance compared to the overall school, with higher proficiency rates in recent years. However, the school's performance has declined over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 1,961 out of 5,692 California elementary schools in 2016-2017 to 2,861 out of 5,862 in 2023-2024. Nearby schools, such as Nipaquay Elementary and Miller Elementary, as well as local charter schools like San Diego Global Vision Academy and Elevate, generally outperform Juarez Elementary on test scores and have lower chronic absenteeism rates.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We hate this school, why? Because of the incompetent staff. They can't handle kids apparently. My son has been traumatized since the first week of school here cause they keep calling the police on him. Yes, a 6 year old boy. They have no problems singling him out and suspending him for any and everything. And we're not the only ones who have had their kid suspended countless times, cause we have been in the office and seen others being sent home too. The principal always resorts to the most dramatic way to handle any situation, I hope she gets fired soon after we're done reporting her for these incidents. Close Quote

Open Quote The dual language (Spanish-English) program at Juarez is excellent. I was hesitant to enroll my child based on the school's rating on various websites, but after taking a tour of the school and taking with the principal, I decided to enroll my child. I am very happy with my choice now that my first grader, after a only a few months, is reading and writing in Spanish! The teachers are exceptional and the student/teacher ratio is small. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
