Summary:

Paradise Senior High is a public high school located in Paradise, California, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 476 students. The school is part of the Paradise Unified School District, which is ranked 1175 out of 1568 districts in California and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Paradise Senior High has seen a concerning decline in its statewide ranking and rating over the years, dropping from a high of 409 out of 2017 California high schools in 2017-2018 to 1411 out of 2323 in 2023-2024. The school's SchoolDigger rating has also decreased from 4 stars out of 5 in the past to 2 stars out of 5 in the current school year. While Hispanic students and students with disabilities have performed relatively well, White students and low socioeconomic status students have struggled, with rankings in the bottom 25% of schools. The school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates in Smarter Balanced Assessments and CAST Science tests, is generally below the state and district averages, particularly in mathematics.

Interestingly, Inspire School of Arts and Sciences, a public charter school located about 12 miles away, consistently outperforms Paradise Senior High and the state averages in academic achievement. In contrast, Ridgeview High (Continuation), a school within the same district, has significantly lower academic performance and higher dropout rates compared to Paradise Senior High. The school's struggles appear to be closely linked to the socioeconomic status of its student population, with around 50% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote New charter school offers many more classes and has a better curriculum. Would rather send my kids 30 minutes away to PV (which I do) than to send them to Paradise High School. Close Quote

Open Quote The drug availability is scary. I have three children that have gone through the school. So I've seen what goes on. I won't be sending our younger son there. I've seen to many kids get caught up with the wrong crowds and drugs. I realize this can happen anywhere. But, my kids and their friends have told me you can get what ever drug you're looking for on campus, it's sold everywhere like vending machines. I've also seen a lot of prejudice and maybe because it's a small town. But I won't go through it again. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
