Monta Loma Elementary

Summary:

Monta Loma Elementary is a public elementary school in Mountain View, California, serving 245 students in grades K-5 and part of the Mountain View Whisman School District. While the school has shown mixed performance on standardized tests, with some grades scoring above the state average in English and math, its overall academic achievement has fluctuated over the years, ranking between 1,008 and 2,329 out of around 5,800 California elementary schools.

Monta Loma's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with male students and students with disabilities performing relatively well, but Hispanic students and those from low-income backgrounds lagging behind their peers. The school's ranking for Hispanic students and English Language Learners is particularly low, indicating a need for targeted interventions and support. Additionally, Monta Loma has experienced a sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 6.9% in 2017-2018 to 27.1% in 2021-2022, which could be a contributing factor to the school's academic performance.

When compared to nearby schools, Monta Loma's performance is generally lower than the high-performing Stevenson Elementary and lags significantly behind schools in the neighboring Palo Alto Unified and Los Altos Elementary districts, such as Juana Briones, Santa Rita, and Herbert Hoover.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Monta Loma is a diverse community with an inclusive culture and a dedicated set of teachers and staff. Over the past 7 yrs I have witnessed the school community grow, improve and adapt to many changes, all for the best. New construction is finishing up to complement the academic and social changes being implemented to ensure each student receives what they need to succeed. Close Quote

Open Quote I have been overwhelmingly impressed with this lovely neighborhood school for the last 3 years. I have a 2nd grader and Kindergartener who each have their own unique style of learning and the Differentiated Instruction they receive at Monta Loma has truly helped foster their love of learning. The community is diverse and though parental-involvement could be better, it is such a warm, nurturing environment for the students/families alike. Principal Lyon is hands-on (and a former educator!) who makes an earnest effort to communicate with parents about both the successes and challenges the school faces. She's very approachable and really listens. I've loved every one of the teachers my girls have had and my girls have thrived both in the classroom and out while on the Monta Loma campus. My professional background is in private school education administration so I feel I can speak to the depth and breadth of the capabilities and talents Monta Loma teachers bring to the table. They are some of the hardest-working, committed & nurturing educators I have ever experienced and definitely well-deserving of the California Distinguished School award that was bestowed in 2014. The enrichment opportunities are endless as well - choir, band, gardening, art, physical education, chess, Lego robotics and student leadership to name a few. I look forward to many more years of involvement at Monta Loma Elementary. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
