Roscomare Road Elementary

Summary:

Roscomare Road Elementary is a high-performing public elementary school in Los Angeles, California, serving 413 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which is ranked 871 out of 1,568 districts in the state.

Roscomare Road Elementary consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in California, with students significantly outperforming the district and state averages in Smarter Balanced Assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics, often exceeding 80% proficiency across grade levels. The school's science proficiency rates, as measured by the CAST assessment, are also impressive, with 80% of students scoring proficient or better, compared to just 23.96% for the district. However, the school has experienced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, from 5.2% in 2017-2018 to 20.0% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the district average.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Chandler Elementary and Kenter Canyon Elementary Charter, Roscomare Road Elementary outperforms them in academic achievement, with significantly higher proficiency rates in ELA and Math. The school's student demographics, with a lower percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, also differ from the nearby schools, which tend to have higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students. While Roscomare Road Elementary's academic success is commendable, the increase in chronic absenteeism is a trend that the school and district should address to ensure that all students have the opportunity to fully engage in their education.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Roscomare is the best school! My children love their school and their teachers and have really excelled. The Principal is terrific. She knows all the students and has brought amazing programs to the school. The teachers are all really experienced and work together like a family and go well above and beyond--always at the school after hours. The school has won gold medals each year for Science, was just named #1 for reading, and #2 for math. There is a family STEM night, and lots of community oriented events, monthly parent meetings and teacher/parent workshops. It is a very special small community eventhough it's in a big city, and LAUSD. There are really nice families, and great to have my kids go to school with all the other kids from their block and neighborhood - a true neighborhood school in LA! There is a really amazing holiday show that all the students participate in, even the little TK class. There are two wonderful musicals each year--hard to believe it's a public elementary school. Be prepared to contribute $1,000 per student to pay for the programs like full-time computer teacher, art teacher, music teacher, science teacher, PE coaches, teacher aides--but it is really worth it and wouldn't want my kids to be without these programs at school. The parent group that supports the school encourages lots of participation but seems to appreciate any level of support. They have an informative weekly newsletter that really helps stay organized and not miss things. Every family has to participate in a valet drop off program but its only about 30 minutes a few times a year so not that big of a deal and really keeps the traffic moving. Overall a 10 out of 10 in my book.. just wish it went past 5th grade! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
