Cleveland Elementary

Summary:

Cleveland Elementary is a public elementary school located in Lakewood, California, serving grades K-5 with a total enrollment of 452 students. The school is part of the Long Beach Unified School District, which is ranked 654 out of 1,568 districts in California and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Cleveland Elementary consistently ranks among the top 200-800 elementary schools in California, with a 5-star rating in 2023-2024 and a 4-star rating in the previous years. The school's proficiency rates in Smarter Balanced Assessments for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science are significantly higher than the district and state averages across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, 81.19% of Cleveland Elementary students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 49.52% for the Long Beach Unified School District and 47.04% for the state of California. Cleveland Elementary also excels in the performance of various student subgroups, ranking among the top 10-720 schools in California for Hispanic, White, Special Education, Low Socioeconomic Status, and Disabled students.

While Cleveland Elementary outperforms the nearby Twain Elementary, Burcham Elementary, and MacArthur Elementary in the Long Beach Unified School District, the gap is not as significant when compared to schools in the Bellflower Unified School District and ABC Unified School District. However, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 7.5% in 2020-2021 to 37.2% in 2021-2022, which is an area of concern that the school and district should investigate and address.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The new administration does not communicate with parents or staff. The school is like a ship without a captain. Teacher's do not seem to be communicating with each other, and as a result are having to fend for themselves. With the increased class size, teacher's frequently switching grades with no prep time, and an absentee principal, the school seems to be in a cycle of decline.

The school promotes an active PTA, Science Fair and Band, but the reality is much different. The PTA is made of a group of friends who do not allow any input or share any plans until after the fact. They spent more money on their own awards then they did on the Science Fair. The "Science Fair" amounted to kids turning in assignments, and then picking them up a few weeks later with a participation medal. There was never any demonstration or opportunity for students to discuss their project.

The "band" consisted of 4 kids in 2012.

There is no gifted or pals program, and the principal has "no idea" how to start one. Principal Montoya has also said she has no interest in having a master calendar, no knowledge of field trips, science fair, changes to the bell schedule or movement of teacher's from one grade to another.

This school is an accident waiting to happen. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
