Summary:

Palomares Elementary is a public elementary school in Castro Valley, California, serving 121 students in grades K-5. It is part of the Castro Valley Unified School District, which is ranked 214 out of 1,568 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Palomares Elementary generally performs better than the state average on standardized tests, but lags behind the Castro Valley Unified School District average. For example, in 2023-2024, Palomares had 56.94% proficiency in ELA End of Course, compared to 66.08% for the district and 47.04% for the state. However, the school has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 2.8% in 2018-2019 to 18.0% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the 12.1% rate at nearby Proctor Elementary. Palomares also has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 34.71% in 2022-2023, compared to 22.6% at Proctor Elementary.

Palomares Elementary has shown strong performance for its Hispanic students, ranking 41st out of 4,963 California elementary schools in this subgroup in 2018-2019. However, its female and low-socioeconomic status students have lower rankings compared to the overall school. Additionally, Palomares lags behind some of the higher-performing nearby schools, such as Proctor Elementary, Jensen Ranch Elementary, and Independent Elementary, in terms of test scores and overall state rankings. Palomares could focus on addressing the increase in chronic absenteeism and improving test scores, particularly in English Language Arts, to better align with the performance of the Castro Valley Unified School District and the top-performing nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is bad news. My son came their with high self esteem and strong academics. He left with his head down. The school threatened to remove him constantly. If they are 2 minutes late, if they can't keep up with the curriculum, or if they get into any trouble, the school threatens to kick them out. The principle is extremely rude, the teachers ... lets just say they caused us to hire a private tutor. They most likely only have high test scores because they criminalize and remove the students who need guidance. Want your kid to develop confidence issues? This is the school for you. I would give negative stars if possible. My poor 5 year old!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
