Pacific Coast High (Continuation)

Summary:

Pacific Coast High (Continuation) is a small public high school in Arcata, California, serving grades 9-12 and part of the Northern Humboldt Union High School District. The school has a student population of just 39 and is classified as a continuation high school, typically serving students who are at risk of not graduating or have faced challenges in a traditional high school setting.

Pacific Coast High (Continuation) has seen inconsistent performance over the years, with its statewide ranking fluctuating from 533 out of 2,323 high schools in 2023-2024 (4-star rating) to 1,697 out of 2,017 high schools in 2017-2018 (1-star rating). The school has relatively high graduation rates, ranging from 85.0% to 97.4% over the past five years, but also struggles with higher dropout rates (2.4% to 10.0%) compared to nearby schools like McKinleyville High (0.0%) and Arcata High (0.5%). Additionally, Pacific Coast High (Continuation) has faced challenges with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 30.5% to 67.5% over the past five years, significantly higher than the rates at McKinleyville High (42.7%) and Arcata High (37.4%).

Academically, Pacific Coast High (Continuation) consistently underperforms compared to the Northern Humboldt Union High School District and the state of California in various assessments, including Smarter Balanced Assessments for English Language Arts and Mathematics, as well as the California Science Test (CAST). The school also serves a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 79.49% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023, significantly higher than the nearby schools. These factors suggest that Pacific Coast High (Continuation) faces significant challenges in maintaining consistent performance, addressing attendance and engagement issues, and supporting its student population, which will be crucial for improving student outcomes and better serving the Arcata community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I graduated from Pacific Coast High School in 2007. Back then my parents put me in pacific coast because it allowed me to work at my own pace. I was able to complete 3 years of high school in two and graduated at 17 years old. The teachers and faculty genuinely cared about my education, I will always appreciate this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
