Thomas Edison Charter Academy

Summary:

Thomas Edison Charter Academy is a public charter elementary school serving 590 students in grades K-8 in San Francisco, CA. The school is part of the Thomas Edison Charter Academy District, which is ranked 1204 out of 1568 districts in California and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Thomas Edison Charter Academy has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of California elementary schools, maintaining a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past 4-5 years. The school's proficiency rates on standardized tests are significantly below state averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with particularly low performance for male students, Hispanic students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The school also has a high chronic absenteeism rate of 36.7%, which is much higher than the state average.

While the nearby Milk (Harvey) Civil Rights Elementary and Rooftop Elementary schools in the San Francisco Unified School District generally outperform Thomas Edison Charter Academy, these two schools stand out as high-performing outliers in the area. In contrast, Thomas Edison Charter Academy's declining free/reduced lunch rates and lower student-teacher ratio suggest potential changes in the school's demographics and resources, but these have not yet translated into improved academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My kids have made lots of friends here and have felt welcomed. The school feels safe and friendly. The parents are friendly and down to earth. The staff and teachers are professional and nice. More differentiated learning for kids who excel in certain subjects would be better for us academically, but most public schools face this same challenge. Our kids have learned Spanish as well as an appreciation for people who speak Spanish. The kids take art, dance, and music classes from TK-8th grades. We will look back at this school very fondly when we leave in the future. The school has been through some ups and downs in the 10+ years that it has operated as a community-based charter school, but I think it's finding a happy resting place. I don't feel that the school's most recent test scores really reflect the strength of the kids. We had a rough year in terms of teacher turnover the last time we did testing (2019) and our scores dropped quite a bit from before. However, almost all of our teachers came back this year so we're on the right track. I would recommend it! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
