Vox Collegiate of Los Angeles

Summary:

Vox Collegiate of Los Angeles is a public charter middle school serving grades 6-10 in Los Angeles, CA, with 182 students. The school is part of the Vox Collegiate of Los Angeles District, which is ranked 649 out of 1568 districts in California and has a 3-star rating.

Vox Collegiate has shown improvement in its academic performance over the past few years, with its statewide school rank increasing from 2342 out of 2740 in 2021-2022 to 1196 out of 2777 in 2023-2024. However, its performance is still below the state average in most subject areas. The school has strong performance for its African American and Hispanic student subgroups, ranking 37th and 708th out of their respective statewide subgroups in 2023-2024. This is a notable strength compared to the school's overall performance. Vox Collegiate has a high chronic absenteeism rate of 41.9% in 2022-2023, which is significantly higher than the state average, and a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 72.73% to 96.15% over the past few years.

Vox Collegiate's performance is generally stronger than the nearby Animo James B. Taylor Charter Middle and Mary McLeod Bethune Middle, which are also serving predominantly low-income student populations. However, it lags behind the higher-performing Alliance College-Ready Middle Academy 4 and Watts Learning Center Charter Middle in terms of academic achievement. Addressing the school's challenges, such as high chronic absenteeism and lower overall academic achievement, while continuing to support its strengths, will be crucial for improving student outcomes at Vox Collegiate.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I was led to believe my child would receive a rigorous education, but the school barely has books or computers and do next to nothing to maintain a comfortable learning atmosphere. I will be pulling my student out and moving to an LAUSD school that has basic resources and more experienced teachers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
