Love Elementary's academic performance, as measured by Smarter Balanced Assessments, is generally lower than the Alameda Unified School District and the state of California averages across various grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts/Literacy at Love Elementary ranged from 52.05% (3rd grade) to 60.53% (4th grade), compared to the Alameda Unified School District's range of 66.16% to 67.6% and the state's range of 42.8% to 47.37%. Similarly, in Mathematics, Love Elementary's proficiency rates ranged from 41.56% (5th grade) to 54.05% (3rd grade), while the Alameda Unified School District's range was 57.89% to 73.92%, and the state's range was 35.02% to 45.64%. Additionally, Love Elementary has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 8.8% in the 2020-2021 school year to 26.3% in the 2021-2022 school year and 17.9% in the 2022-2023 school year, which is notably higher than the chronic absenteeism rates of the nearby schools, such as Franklin Elementary (9.7%) and Edison Elementary (12.3%).

Love Elementary has a relatively high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 36.72% in 2021-2022 to 49.26% in 2022-2023, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools, such as Franklin Elementary (24.21%) and Edison Elementary (21.25%). This suggests that the socioeconomic and attendance factors may be contributing to the academic performance differences between Love Elementary and its neighboring schools, and addressing these challenges could be an important focus for the school to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We've been at Haight for K + 1st and are excited to return for 2nd grade. The parents of HH are involved in the classroom and after school too. It's a 'small' school so there isn't the overwhelm that can come with a larger sprawling campus but most schools in Alameda are similarly small. We had Ms Morrison for Kinder and Ms Bader for 1st, both excellent and responsive special teachers! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
