Hawaiian Elementary

Summary:

Hawaiian Elementary is a public elementary school located in Hawaiian Gardens, CA, serving grades K-6 with 293 students. It is part of the ABC Unified School District, which is ranked 414 out of 1,568 districts in California and has a 4-star rating.

Hawaiian Elementary faces significant challenges compared to its nearby counterparts and the district/state averages. The school has seen a dramatic increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 2.7% in 2018-2019 to 38.0% in 2021-2022, notably higher than the nearby Willow Elementary (31.3%) and Furgeson (Venn W.) Elementary (20.9%). Proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics at Hawaiian Elementary are consistently lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 38.41% of Hawaiian Elementary students were proficient or better in ELA End-of-Course, compared to 63.5% for the district and 47.04% for the state.

Despite these challenges, Hawaiian Elementary's English Language Learner and Migrant student subgroups demonstrate relatively stronger performance compared to their peers statewide. However, the school's high percentage of students (over 84%) eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage, may be a significant factor contributing to the overall lower performance. Addressing the root causes of the school's performance issues, particularly in the areas of attendance and socioeconomic status, could be a key focus for the school and ABC Unified School District moving forward.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is the worst principal that I have encountered. She tries to tell parents what she knows about your child is better than what you know. She also doesn't feel that she needs to do what is required of her as a principal. As far as the school rules are concerned, she does nothing when they are violated. When phone calls are made to the school, the administrative people are poor in relaying the message. If you do not push and advocate for your child, then your child just becomes a dollar sign to them. Would not recommend them at all!!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
