Paseo Hills School

Summary:

Paseo Hills School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Deer Valley Unified District in Phoenix, Arizona, with a student population of 743. The school has seen a shift in its racial makeup over the past few years, with a decrease in White students and an increase in Hispanic students.

Paseo Hills School faces several challenges, including consistently underperforming on standardized tests compared to the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in AASA English Language Arts ranged from 19% to 47%, while the district scores ranged from 52% to 61%, and the state scores ranged from 39% to 46%. A similar pattern is observed in AASA Mathematics, where Paseo Hills School's proficiency rates were significantly lower than the district and state. Additionally, the school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Asian students performing much better than African American and Hispanic students.

Despite these challenges, Paseo Hills School has maintained a 0% dropout rate for the past several years, which is a positive indicator of student retention and engagement. The school has also performed exceptionally well in serving its homeless student population, ranking 23 out of 102 AZ elementary schools in 2022-2023 and 22 out of 423 AZ elementary schools in 2020-2021, both with a 4 or 5-star rating from Deer Valley Unified District. However, when compared to other nearby schools in the district, such as Union Park School and Stetson Hills School, as well as some nearby charter schools like Reid Traditional Schools' Valley Academy and Adams Traditional Academy, Paseo Hills School generally underperforms.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Poor leadership.. teachers regularly express distaste in their careers to the students, taking away from their educational experience, as my child and friends are always making please don't quit on us posters for their disgruntled teachers. Just nauseating to deal with this school. Close Quote

Open Quote My son has been at Paseo for 5 years. This year I was told (by his teacher) there is no after school help and no tutoring. If your child falls behind and the teacher with 29 other students, cannot get to him/her, it will be up to the parent to teach the child. The quality of Teaching is up to the Parent, not the Teacher. The dont have Homework now, it is called "Practice Work". They dont receive a grade on Practice work, but if they need to re-take a test, they have to show their Practice work. I am hoping to move my son to a Charter School very soon. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
