Mesa Distance Learning Program

Summary:

The Mesa Distance Learning Program is a small, alternative public virtual school serving grades K-12 in Mesa, Arizona, which is part of the Mesa Unified District. With a student population of just 107, the school has some notable strengths and challenges compared to nearby schools and the state average.

On the positive side, the Mesa Distance Learning Program outperforms the district and state in several academic areas, including 11th grade English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency, as well as 5th, 7th, and 8th grade English Language Arts proficiency. However, the school faces significant concerns with its 0% four-year graduation rate, which is significantly lower than the state average, and a steady increase in dropout rates, rising from 1.2% in 2019-2020 to 12.7% in 2022-2023. When compared to nearby schools, the Mesa Distance Learning Program stands out, with Eagleridge Enrichment Program having higher graduation rates and lower dropout rates, and EDUPRIZE SCHOOL Gilbert demonstrating higher graduation rates, lower dropout rates, and stronger academic performance in many grade levels.

Overall, the Mesa Distance Learning Program has some academic bright spots, but the school's declining graduation rates and increasing dropout rates are significant challenges that require immediate attention and intervention. The school should explore strategies to address these issues while also seeking to replicate the success seen in its stronger academic performance areas.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I couldn't be happier with my son's education here. He completed a few elective courses to help him graduate from high school early. He found them challenging and engaging. The early boost allowed him to start college early and he earned his Bachelor's degree, with honors, before his 21st birthday. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
