Papago School

Summary:

Papago School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Creighton Elementary District in Phoenix, Arizona, with a student population of 822. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Arizona elementary schools based on the SchoolDigger statewide ranking, with a 0 or 1 out of 5 star rating in recent years.

Papago School's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates on state assessments, is significantly below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2022-2023 school year, only 19% of 4th graders at Papago School were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to 45% statewide and 18% in the Creighton Elementary District. The school also has relatively high dropout rates, ranging from 0.4% to 1.9% in recent years, which is higher than the state average. Additionally, Papago School has a very high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with over 85% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year.

The challenges faced by Papago School appear to be systemic within the Creighton Elementary District, as the nearby schools within the district (such as Creighton Virtual Academy, Gateway School, The Creighton Academy, and Monte Vista Elementary School) also perform poorly on academic measures, with proficiency rates generally below the state averages.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school has made a lot of changes. My 2 kids are in middle school and they have been there since kindergarten. The new principal together with the teachers have turned Papago around. They are doing better in test scores and there seems to be more structure. There are a lot of spanish speaking students so I know it is hard for the teachers. I'm proud of Papago School! About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
