Compass High School

Summary:

Compass High School is a public charter high school in Tucson, Arizona, serving 459 students in grades 9-12. The school's student population is diverse, with 41.61% White, 47.28% Hispanic, 5.45% African American, 1.09% Asian, and 4.58% two or more races.

Despite its diverse student body, Compass High School consistently underperforms academically, ranking 295 out of 469 Arizona high schools. Only 19% of 11th-grade students are proficient or better in English Language Arts, and just 17% are proficient or better in Mathematics. The school's dropout rate is alarmingly high at 31.5%, and its four-year graduation rate is a mere 30.2% - significantly lower than nearby schools like Sahuaro High School (89.3%) and Palo Verde High Magnet School (71.7%). Compass High School's performance is particularly concerning for Hispanic, White, and female students, who rank in the bottom 25% of Arizona high schools.

The data suggests that Compass High School faces significant challenges in providing a quality education to its diverse student population, which includes a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Targeted interventions and support, such as tutoring, mentoring, and specialized academic programs, may be necessary to help the school improve its academic performance, graduation rates, and student outcomes. Collaboration with the Tucson Unified District and other nearby schools, like Santa Rita High School, could also be beneficial in addressing the school's challenges and improving educational opportunities for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I could not have graduated without this school. The entire staff was amazing and beyond patient with me, the students were kind from day one and I never had to worry about fitting in with certain cliques, and the teachers always made time to help me out, even on their breaks. I went in at 18 having only been through elementary school up to the 3rd grade and in 3 years was able to walk out with my high school diploma. Compass High School is amazing! Close Quote

Open Quote Smoking and vaping rampant especially ibetween classes on the south east corner of the intersection of Sarnoff and 22nd. Office staff could care less about the issue from the response I was given. As a parent I would not recommend this school. The public school system and it's lack of resources is far better. Open Quote My boys attended Compass. My one son had a learning disability. We had an IEP in place since he was in the 2nd grade. This school had no idea how to conduct an IEP meeting or how to write up an IEP. It took us several times with me giving direction. The teachers didn't even come to the IEP meeting to give an update on how he was doing in class. They were out of compliance and the principal didn't seem to care or see to it that things were done right.
My other son failed a class his freshman year and made the class up. They told him he wasn't going to graduate because he was short on credits. We went in and spoke to the principal / owner who said that he didn't complete or make up the class. He did and passed it with a B - As a parent I sat there and told her to go through his entire folder of records. Yep it was there and he did receive a grade of a B.
This school is unprofessional and students wont get an education. My sons came home with stories of how they watched movies in classes. didn't have to go to class. How teachers tried to be more like friends than a teacher. Students get away with murder and don't have to go to class. Students check in when they get to school and the school gets paid for them being there. The kids ditch, go out behind the school and smoke and the teachers and staff know about it and don't care because the school has checked them in and they are getting paid.
This is a joke of a school. If you want your children to get an education put them somewhere else. Close Quote

Open Quote My son has been at Compass for two days and has never been happier. He is intelligent and talented and is not treated like a metric number lost in a crowd. He is treated with respect and as an individual with aspirations of his own. Morals are learned at home, I am at Peace with our choice. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
