Canyon Pointe Academy

Summary:

Canyon Pointe Academy is a public charter elementary school located in Glendale, Arizona, serving grades K-6 with a relatively small student population of 77 students as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school has seen a concerning decline in its statewide ranking and academic performance over the years, with significant disparities in achievement across different student subgroups.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have had a very POOR experience. When I first toured the school, I have to admit I was impressed. I toured with the principle (at that time), she told me that there were going to be TWO kindergarten classes, they were building a new play ground for the younger classes and the class sizes were supposed to no more than 18 students in the K class. Now, the school is on the THIRD principle, they have not built the play ground and my son ended up with 32 kids in his class. We signed him up for the summer week program so he would meet his teacher and get acquainted with the classroom setting and rules. He had a wonderful time. We were very excited. The very next week on the first day of school we walked into his classroom and he had a new teacher. Apparently the teacher he was supposed to have had quit like two days before the first day of school. His teacher this year has done the best she could with having 32 kids on 3 different levels of abilities and reading groups.
We received a letter right around Thanksgiving ( if I’m remembering correctly) that basically said that the school was in danger of losing its charter status because the previous board members and principle refused to comply with Arizona’s State requirements for standardized testing. They ultimately were able to keep the charter status but have to get into compliance with testing. There have been so many administrative and teacher turnovers that it has caused a disruption in everything.
THE FINAL THING THAT HAS HAPPENED THAT made me want to write this review and let everyone know I WOULD NOT recommend this school to anyone... when we enrolled and signed up, the school offered FREE before and after school care. Now with ONLY 6 weeks left in the school year, they have decided to TAKE AWAY the before and after care from 60 of the 100 families that are using this program. The 40 they are allowing to stay were decided by a lottery. The reason they for taking away the program is the cost to training and staffing because they have such a high turn over rate. I have no other option but to take my son out of this school with only 6 weeks left! I am a working mother that relies on after school care. They can’t offer the option to pay because they have a non compete clause with the day care next door. THIS IS DRASTICALLY AFFECTING my family. They day care next door is not an option for me, the cost to too much. $320 a month for 2 hours of care per child after school. I just can’t believe that they couldn’t wait until the end of the year!! The change may make sense to them, but ultimately what cost. I’m not sure but doesn’t enrollment affect the amount of tax money and federal funding they receive?
AND all of the families that were not chosen have 11 days to figure out what makes sense to them. Close Quote

Open Quote Extremely negative administration. Many violations last school year 2016-2017 by the Arizona board of Education for noncompliance. The United States department of civil rights found the administration to be retaliating against the students disability.
Students Math and English are below average. Be sure to check their Az report card. Close Quote

Open Quote The staff kids have so much privileges and are plastered all over the year book. Unless your parent works at the school you will not ever shine. Secondly, the new teachers are so immature and play such nasty childish games.. Mrs. Rhone will always stick up for the teachers even in heart she knows what they are doing is wrong. I don't trust my childs' teacher.. What options do I have? :( Close Quote

Open Quote They may have a great academic program, but Mrs. Rhone (the principal) has fostered such an environment of hate in the 5th and 6 grades, that the poor teachers dont even get a chance to teach. Mrs Rhones pets (about 15%) and those that absolutely, totally hate her (about 50%)are constantly warring, and the other poor students are stuck in the middle of all of it. Sure seems like she is more interested in power than in educating. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
