Sequoia Village School

Summary:

Sequoia Village School is a public charter elementary school serving 163 students in grades K-8 in Show Low, Arizona, which is part of the Edkey Inc. - Sequoia Village School district. The school faces significant challenges, with consistently low academic performance, a predominantly White student population, and a high percentage of students from low-income families.

Sequoia Village School's proficiency rates on standardized tests are significantly lower than the state and district averages, ranging from just 6% to 23% in English Language Arts and 5% to 15% in Mathematics. The school's racial makeup is less diverse than the surrounding area, with 71% to 76% of students being White. Additionally, Sequoia Village School has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 53% to 60%, indicating a greater proportion of students from low-income families. The school's dropout rates have also been increasing, rising from 0% in 2016-2017 to 5.2% in 2021-2022, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools.

Compared to other schools in the area, Sequoia Village School underperforms. The George Washington Academy, another charter school in the same district, outperforms Sequoia Village School on academic measures. Similarly, the traditional public schools in the Snowflake Unified District, such as Highland Primary School and Taylor Elementary School, generally outperform Sequoia Village School on academic measures. Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $9,765 to $13,373 over the past four school years, the academic performance does not reflect this higher level of investment.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am not from this tiny little, underserved area and I guess that makes all the difference in my perception. MOST of the schools up here are backwards, and of the choices, Sequoia Village School was probably the worst one I could have made. I have exceptional children ages 9 and 12 who have attended for 2 years and it has been a nightmare. My younger child is not challenged and is allowed to slack off with minimal contact from the teacher (who actually is very nice, hence the 2 stars and not 1) however my oldest child, also extremely bright with language arts, was recently diagnosed with ADD and initially had pervasive anxiety (diagnosed) which had not been linked to a source of undiagnosed ADD. Tony Reinhardt has led me around by my nose, attempting everything in his power to NOT address my daughter's issue, placing all the blame on the home environment and the student. Her teachers are downright mean and punitive and unless you can get on a 504 or IEP they are VERY inconsistent in maintaining agreements made in meetings. And good luck getting any evaluations or accommodations. Every bit of headway I made came after a long battle and as a single mom, I had to drag advocates with me. I usually left shaking from the confrontations/meetings. My daughter's counselors, who came and tried to intervene on her behalf, cannot believe how horrid and underhanded he is. If you do not have a mainstream child, I would avoid Sequoia. If you are contemplating moving to the area, I would strongly take into consideration the backward education system. I am a student myself and have attended college at community colleges in the valley, out of state at a top engineering/medical university as well as U of A and the education I have received at the local college is far below other state universities and community colleges. The college, however, is populated with adults who do not get pushed around, brow beaten, and left to their own devices at a time in their education when they do not possess all the skills to self-educate. This town, although laid back and Small Town-ish, is not a place I would have chosen to live in long term and I am finding out that if you don't come from here you should probably stay away. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
