Skyline Prep High School

Summary:

Skyline Prep High School is a public charter high school in Phoenix, Arizona, serving around 200 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Tempe Union High School District, which is ranked 465 out of 540 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Skyline Prep faces significant challenges, with a student population that is 40.5% African American, 40% Hispanic, and only 9% White. Academically, the school consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Arizona high schools, with test scores well below state and district averages. Its 4-year graduation rate has declined sharply, from 93.9% in 2017-2018 to just 60.5% in 2021-2022, and its dropout rate has increased from 1.8% to 5.0% over the same period. Skyline Prep serves a high-needs population, with 80% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than nearby schools like Mountain Pointe High School and Tapbi.

Despite spending significantly more per student ($20,398 in 2021-2022) than nearby schools, Skyline Prep's academic performance and student outcomes continue to decline. This suggests the need for a comprehensive, data-driven approach that focuses on equity, instructional quality, and student support services. By learning from the successes of higher-performing schools in the area, such as Hope College and Career Readiness Academy and Paideia Liberal Arts Academy, Skyline Prep can develop strategies to better serve its diverse student population and improve overall educational outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote DO NOT send your child to this school. My son had 5 teachers for one class in the first quarter. When I went for conferences I noticed that there were no books on the shelf and no computers for them to use. I was promised by the enrollment staff that this was an A+ school, but the Dept of Ed website says it is not. I pulled my child and sent him to another prep charter. I have also been informed that the entire high schools staff resigned over mistreatment and lack of resources. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
