Academy of Tucson Middle School

Summary:

Academy of Tucson Middle School is a public charter school serving 154 students in grades 5-8 in Tucson, Arizona. The school has a diverse student population, with 47.4% White, 38.31% Hispanic, and smaller percentages of other racial groups.

While the school has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the years, dropping from 124th out of 521 Arizona middle schools in 2014-2015 to 455th out of 854 in 2022-2023, its performance varies across different student subgroups. African American students have a relatively higher ranking, while Hispanic and White students have lower rankings. Female students generally perform better than male students, and English Language Learner and Special Education students also have lower rankings compared to the overall school performance. The school's test scores are generally below the state and district averages in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science.

Compared to nearby public schools, such as Rincon Vista Middle School and Esperero Canyon Middle School, Academy of Tucson Middle School's performance is generally lower. However, it performs better than some other nearby public schools, such as Doolen Middle School, Alice Vail Middle School, and Secrist Middle School. The school's decreasing dropout rates and the diversity of its student population are positive aspects, but the significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch suggests that the school's student population is becoming more economically disadvantaged, which may impact academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is a great school! My kids love it, the school has a great principal and teachers. It is a wonderful environment for my kids, there is a lot less bullying here than at the public school we just came from last year, we should have moved sooner!
Our kids grades are written in their planners weekly along with the teachers comments, if there are any major concerns, I actually get phone calls, such as when my boy has lunch detention for failing to turn in home work.

The school also has free after school tutoring every day! The only drawback is the school does not participate in the free national lunch program. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
