Mountain Pine Elementary School

Summary:

Mountain Pine Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 342 students in grades K-6 in Mountain Pine, AR, which is part of the Mountain Pine School District. Unfortunately, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Arkansas elementary schools over the past decade, maintaining a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The key challenges facing Mountain Pine Elementary are its significantly underperforming test scores compared to state averages, with only 21.8% of students proficient in English Language Arts and 19.5% proficient in math. The school also serves an extremely high-poverty student population, with 99.71% to 100% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. While the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, it spends less per student than some nearby schools that significantly outperform it, such as Cutter-Morning Star Elementary, Jessieville Elementary, and schools in the Lake Hamilton School District.

The contrast is even more stark when comparing Mountain Pine Elementary to the high-performing magnet schools in the Hot Springs School District, such as Oaklawn STEM Magnet and Langston Elementary Leadership Academy Magnet, which serve similar high-poverty populations but achieve much better academic outcomes. This suggests that simply spending more money may not be enough to improve student performance at Mountain Pine Elementary without other targeted interventions.

Open Quote Very behind academically. Even starting in kindergarten. My son was coming home with work that most 4 year olds could easily do, and his class progressed very slowly. It seemed as though this was not due to the needs of the majority of the students in his class, they were all more than capable of progressing faster. The entire school's test scores are abysmal, it rather seems as though they aren't funded well enough to hire decent teachers. I went to Mtn. Pine growing up K-12 as well, and was not at all prepared for college when i attempted it. I moved my children to a different school, with the same size and funding, with much better results. Homeschool is a better option than Mountain Pine if that is a possibility for you. If you have no choice or are low-income, I would suggest supplementing your childs education as best as you can from home with other resources. I am very sad that I have to give a huge thumbs down to my alma mater. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
