International Studies Magnet

Summary:

International Studies Magnet is an elementary school in Jonesboro, Arkansas that serves grades 1-6 and has 642 students. This school consistently outperforms the Jonesboro School District and the state of Arkansas on standardized tests, ranking 192 out of 497 elementary schools in the state and earning a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

With a 100% free/reduced lunch rate, International Studies Magnet serves a high-poverty student population, yet spends $9,013 per student, higher than the state average. This investment appears to pay off, as the school's test scores are significantly better than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 42.9% of students at International Studies Magnet were proficient or better in ATLAS/Mathematics, compared to 30.8% for the Jonesboro School District and 36.4% for the state.

While International Studies Magnet outperforms the other magnet schools in the Jonesboro School District, the performance gap is significant. For instance, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in ATLAS/English Language Arts at International Studies Magnet was 38.9%, compared to only 15.6% at the Math & Science Magnet School. This suggests that International Studies Magnet has developed effective educational strategies that could potentially be shared with other schools in the district to improve overall performance.

Open Quote I think it is the best elementary school in the Jonesboro area. The pricipal, teachers and support staff are very courteous and professional. You know it is the best school for your children from the moment you walk into the building. It is a very good enviornment for children to learn utilizing 2 computer labs, library, art, and music to learn about the world around us. It is #1 in my opinion. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
