George Hall Elementary School

Summary:

George Hall Elementary School is a public elementary school in Mobile, Alabama, serving 280 students in grades PK-5. The school has a predominantly African American student body, with over 95% of students identifying as such.

Despite higher per-student spending compared to nearby schools, George Hall Elementary has consistently underperformed academically, ranking in the bottom half of Alabama elementary schools. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 20% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in math, compared to 42.16% statewide and 30.58% in the Mobile County district. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students (over 88%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating significant economic challenges faced by the student population.

While the nearby schools, such as SpencerWestlawn Elementary School, Morningside Elementary School, and Old Shell Road Magnet School, also serve predominantly minority and economically disadvantaged student populations, they generally outperform George Hall Elementary in academic measures. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics may be contributing to the school's underperformance, and that targeted interventions and resources could be crucial in improving educational outcomes for the students at George Hall Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love the surroundings, the teachers, and staff as a whole. They give the children so much enlightenment and I am forever grateful. Check out the wonderful staff over there and you will see exactly what I am talking about. The principal at George Hall has turned the school around tremendously and not only the parents appreciate the love and care they show but the students as well. My child comes home everyday telling me something he did and enjoyed at school. It is a great learning environment for any child ready to learn and become somebody. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
