Open Quote I have 4 children at EKCS- 2 have been in the middle school (7th & 8th grades) and 3 are currently in the high school. I had thought Effie would provide a good transition for them to a larger public high school, but the experience they're having at EKCS is so good, they've all stayed. I have 4 kids who like going to school, can you imagine? My 7th grader is working very hard, but likes his teacher and his classmates. They're reading quality literature, not the "grade appropriate", boring, written for school curriculum by authors no one has heard of stuff you see in many grade school programs. The school is small and has tutoring before and after school for students who need help, and in addition to regular classes, offers dual-credit college courses for students ready for that challenge. That means that while they are fulfilling core curriculum requirements for high school, they can also earn UAF credits for the same class. My daughter, who's a junior, already has 15 UAF credits, and is earning 9 more this semester. On the days of the week a college class does not meet, EKCS faculty has class with the students to reinforce learning and support students working on college assignments and projects. My kids know every teacher in the school, and every teacher knows each of my children personally. Faculty quality is high and their level of engagement with the students is wonderful. This is a relatively new school that supports and challenges each student to succeed at the highest level of achievement of which each is capable in a family atmosphere. Nothing's perfect, but this school is trying really hard to serve the students, and constantly modifying programs to better address student needs and goals. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
