Randy Smith Middle School

Summary:

Randy Smith Middle School is a public middle school located in Fairbanks, Alaska, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 407 students. The school is part of the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, which is ranked 13 out of 24 districts in Alaska and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Randy Smith Middle School consistently outperforms the district and state averages in academic proficiency across various subjects and grade levels, particularly in 8th grade. The school's Hispanic and special education students also perform exceptionally well, ranking 8th and 3rd out of Alaska middle schools, respectively. With a diverse student population and higher spending per student compared to nearby schools, Randy Smith Middle School has historically been a strong-performing institution. However, the school has experienced a declining trend in its statewide ranking and overall rating, which may be influenced by factors such as a higher student-teacher ratio and a more advantaged student population compared to nearby schools like North Pole Middle School and Tanana Middle School.

While Randy Smith Middle School has historically performed well, its statewide ranking has declined over the years, from a high of 19th out of 136 Alaska middle schools in the 2012-2013 school year to 49th out of 91 in the 2023-2024 school year. This declining trend is also reflected in the school's overall rating, which has dropped from 4 stars out of 5 in the past to 2 stars out of 5 in the most recent school year. Continued monitoring and targeted interventions may be necessary to address these challenges and maintain the school's high-quality educational outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote this school is literally the worst. not only am i a student, but they treat us like animals. i can’t even say i am able to feel safe at my own school. all the staff are so controlling over everyone, and will get kids in trouble over nothing or maybe even suspend them. i am so glad i’m on my final year at randy. if anyone decides to send their child to randy, be prepared for a lot of stuff. but just DONT SEND THEM TO THIS SCHOOL Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
