Williamstown High School

Summary:

Williamstown High School is a public high school serving grades 6-12 with 671 students, located in Williamstown, West Virginia, and part of the Wood County Schools district, which is ranked 6th out of 55 districts in the state.

Williamstown High School consistently outperforms the state and district averages in academic assessments, with significantly higher proficiency rates in both Mathematics and English Language Arts across all grade levels compared to the Wood County Schools district and the state of West Virginia. For example, in 11th grade, 67% of Williamstown High School students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 53.4% in the district and 50.8% statewide. However, the school's performance for African American students and students with special education needs is relatively lower compared to other subgroups. Additionally, Williamstown High School has a predominantly white student population, with over 96% of students identifying as white, which is higher than the racial makeup of the nearby Parkersburg South High School and Parkersburg High School.

Williamstown High School has a lower percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch compared to the state and district averages, with only 29.84% of students eligible in the 2020-2021 school year. This socioeconomic advantage may contribute to the school's strong academic performance, but it also suggests a need to explore strategies to support students from lower-income families and ensure equitable access to educational resources. Overall, Williamstown High School is a high-performing school that consistently ranks among the top schools in West Virginia, but it must address achievement gaps and promote greater racial diversity to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is a very nice school. Most of the students are friendly and responsible. The teachers care about the students. There are not many serious behavior problems. Most of the students come from stable homes. The academics are the best in the county and the sports programs are excellent. The schools in Williamstown are very supported by the community. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
