The school is part of the Wayne County Schools district, which is ranked 15 out of 55 districts in West Virginia and is rated 4 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Buffalo Middle School stands out for its consistently high academic performance, ranking among the top middle schools in West Virginia, even with a significantly higher percentage of white students (98.41%) compared to the surrounding schools. The school's female students, white students, English language learners, and disabled students all perform particularly well, often ranking in the top 10-20 schools in the state for these subgroups. Additionally, the school's mathematics and science proficiency rates are impressive, often exceeding the state and district averages, though its English Language Arts proficiency is also strong.

While Buffalo Middle School outperforms nearby schools like Wayne Middle School and Vinson Middle School, it faces stronger competition from Ceredo-Kenova Middle School, another high-performing school in the same district. This suggests that the educational quality and resources within the Wayne County Schools district may be a key factor in the success of these schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have been involved in the school system for many years. I recently visited Buffalo Middle and was so impressed with the faculty, the cleanliness of the school, student to teacher ratio and the character of the students. I did not know where they ranked until I viewed this site. After what I witnessed I am not surprised to see them 27th out of 171. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
