Spring Mills High School

Summary:

Spring Mills High School is a public high school located in Martinsburg, West Virginia, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,480 students. The school is part of the Berkeley County Schools district, which is ranked 35 out of 55 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Spring Mills High School has a more diverse student population compared to some of the nearby schools, with 73.72% White, 10.34% African American, 7.57% Hispanic, and 6.62% two or more races. However, the school's academic performance has been mixed in recent years, with its statewide ranking declining from 14th in 2020-2021 to 60th in 2023-2024. The school's performance on state assessments is also below the Berkeley County and West Virginia averages, particularly in mathematics. Additionally, the school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with its Hispanic students ranking 1st out of 8 West Virginia high schools in 2022-2023, but its African American, multi-racial, and special education students performing much lower.

Compared to nearby high schools in the Jefferson County and Morgan County school districts, such as Washington High School and Berkeley Springs High School, Spring Mills High School generally performs below average in terms of academic achievement, particularly in mathematics. The school's relatively high percentage of students (37.99%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch in the 2020-2021 school year also suggests that the school may face additional challenges in supporting students from low-income backgrounds, which could impact academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has FREEZING temperatures and I feel like the heat is broken. Teachers are awful at their jobs and deserve to be fired. Some seem to be on crak or even high. They don't even bother teaching students about scholarships or anything. the 9th graders are treated as 'invisible,' unlike seniors and juniors. For bullying, they just put up a sign and call 10 minutes for class once a week to talk about it sometimes. Don't go here, there many more reasons why this school is no bueno. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
