Walworth Elementary

Summary:

Walworth Elementary is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Walworth, Wisconsin, with 432 students. The school is part of the Walworth J1 School District, which is ranked 381 out of 428 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Walworth Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom half of Wisconsin elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on the Forward Exam across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, the percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts ranged from 28.26% to 58.82%, compared to the state average of 50.36% to 54.1%. In mathematics, the proficiency rates were even lower, ranging from 15.22% to 58.62%, compared to the state average of 53.29% to 56.58%. The school also struggles to support its diverse student population, ranking in the bottom half of Wisconsin elementary schools for various subgroups.

Walworth Elementary's challenges are not unique, as the nearby schools, such as Eastview Elementary, Woods Elementary, and Reek Elementary, generally outperform Walworth Elementary on academic measures. Additionally, the school's performance is closely tied to the overall performance of the Walworth J1 School District, suggesting that the challenges faced by Walworth Elementary are likely systemic issues within the district. Addressing the root causes of the school's high chronic absenteeism, which has risen sharply in recent years, could be a key focus area for the district to improve overall student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote A terrible school for older middle school students. Focus is all on the little kids. Teachers at the middle school level teach with no imagination. The technology is old. There is issues with teacher morale within the building toward the superintendent and I'm not sure a small school like Walworth has to have both a full time superintendent and a principal. The superintendent spends an hour each day supervising student eating in the cafeteria. Sports programs are run like intramural programs. There are much better schools to attend in Wisconsin. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
