Superior High

Summary:

Superior High School is a public high school located in Superior, Wisconsin, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,306 students. The school is part of the Superior School District, which is ranked 299 out of 428 school districts in Wisconsin and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Superior High has shown some strengths, such as strong four-year graduation rates ranging from 84.3% to 94.4%, and relatively low dropout rates between 1.3% and 4.2%. However, the school has faced challenges, including higher chronic absenteeism rates compared to the nearby Northwestern High School, and lower test scores in subjects like Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Science compared to state averages and Northwestern High. The school's performance has also been uneven across different student subgroups, with strengths in Hispanic and Native American student performance but struggles with White, Multi-racial, Special Education, and Disabled students.

Over the past few years, Superior High's statewide ranking has declined, from 187 out of 390 Wisconsin high schools in 2020-2021 to 206 out of 431 in 2023-2024. This suggests that the school may be facing challenges in maintaining or improving its overall performance. Additionally, the school serves a significant population of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 42.5% to 46.41% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, which may impact academic outcomes. Comparing to the nearby Northwestern High School, which generally outperforms Superior High in areas like graduation rates, dropout rates, chronic absenteeism, and test scores, may provide opportunities for Superior High to learn and improve.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son attended this high school, within his first week he was assaulted and not only was there no disciplinary action taken on the two students that assaulted my son but they threatened my son for expulsion. My son was in honors for all of his academics until he got here were his gpa went from 3.7 to 1.4 due to teachers not fully understanding their students. After the first year I made him go to online school and his grades went up drastically. If you are to send your children here be prepared for poor grades, awful teachers, and high drug rate. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
