Shawano Community Middle

Summary:

Shawano Community Middle is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in Shawano, Wisconsin, with 485 students. The school is part of the Shawano School District, which is ranked 361 out of 428 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Shawano Community Middle has consistently been ranked in the bottom half of Wisconsin middle schools over the past decade, with a current statewide rank of 456 out of 641 middle schools.

Shawano Community Middle faces significant challenges in academic achievement, student engagement, and equitable outcomes for its diverse student population. The school consistently underperforms the state average on the Forward Exam across all grade levels and subject areas, with only 45.51% of 6th graders proficient or better in English Language Arts compared to the state average of 54.1%. The school also struggles to serve its low-income and minority students, with these subgroups lagging significantly behind their peers statewide. Additionally, Shawano Community Middle has seen a sharp increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 12.7% in 2019-2020 to 32.2% in 2022-2023, much higher than the state average.

Interestingly, the data reveals a stark contrast between the performance of Shawano Community Middle and nearby middle schools like Pulaski Community Middle and Gillett Middle, which significantly outperform Shawano Community Middle on academic measures, have lower chronic absenteeism rates, and spend less per student. This raises questions about the school's resource allocation and staffing decisions, as Shawano Community Middle spends significantly more per student ($12,292 in 2020-2021) compared to the nearby schools, yet its academic outcomes are substantially worse.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love this school. We moved here a couple of months before school started. They have a great online system for registration. I messed it up (of course) and Mrs. Pennycook (definitely a 007 Bond Girl) solved all my problems! And you get daily emails about lunches and upcoming events. All my granddaughter's teachers are great. The curriculum is up to the new standards. She is now going to Washington on a school trip! AAA+++ Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
