Red Apple Elementary

Summary:

Red Apple Elementary is a public elementary school located in Racine, Wisconsin, serving 283 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Racine Unified School District, which is ranked 413 out of 428 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Red Apple Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Wisconsin elementary schools, with a ranking between 845-1015 out of over 1,000 schools in the state. The school's performance on the Forward Exam, Wisconsin's standardized test, is significantly below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 35.9% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 52.07% statewide and 27.49% in the Racine Unified School District. The school's performance has also declined over time, with proficiency rates dropping from the 2018-2019 school year to the 2022-2023 school year.

While Red Apple Elementary performs relatively well for its African American students, ranking in the top 40% of Wisconsin elementary schools in this subgroup for the past two school years, the school's performance for its Hispanic and White student subgroups is much lower, ranking in the bottom 30% and bottom 10% of Wisconsin elementary schools, respectively. The school has also experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 7.4% in 2018-2019 to 45.5% in 2021-2022, which is well above the state and district averages. Interestingly, the nearby RUSD Montessori, Jerstad-Agerholm School, and Fratt Elementary also perform poorly on academic measures and have high rates of chronic absenteeism, suggesting systemic challenges within the Racine Unified School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I don't know how this web site rates schools, but to give this school 1 star is a joke. This is a fabulous, diverse, family orientated school. They care not just about the students but the entire family. You will not be disappointed. Close Quote

Open Quote Red Apple offers a child centered education with much parent involvement. There is a family atmosphere within the school with parents, students, and teachers working together. Red Apple has a unique multi-graded approach -- with First, Second, and Third graders in homerooms together and Fourth and Fifth graders grouped together. Red Apple has an Options program that brings many interesting activities and experiences to students via community members, parents, and staff members. Red Apple has a tradition of focusing on environmental education and science. There is currently an active Green Apple Project that brings reduce, reuse, recycle into practice for students and staff. Red Apple has a diverse population and works to be an inclusive school for all students. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
