Grantosa Drive Elementary

Summary:

Grantosa Drive Elementary is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Milwaukee School District, with 510 students. However, the school has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Wisconsin, ranking in the bottom 5-10% of schools statewide for the past several years and receiving a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Grantosa Drive Elementary struggles with extremely low proficiency rates on the Forward Exam across all grade levels and subject areas, well below the Milwaukee School District and Wisconsin state averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 5.71% of 3rd graders were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to 21.43% for the district and 52.07% statewide. The school also has very high chronic absenteeism rates, reaching as high as 71.5% in 2021-2022, and elevated dropout rates, reaching 4.6% in 2022-2023. These challenges extend to specific student subgroups as well, including female students, male students, African American students, special education students, and low socioeconomic status students.

While the nearby schools in the Milwaukee School District, such as Engleburg Elementary, Craig Montessori, and Lancaster Elementary, also perform very poorly, the one exception is Milwaukee German Immersion, a public school in the district that ranks significantly higher (3 out of 5 stars) and has much stronger academic performance. This highlights the potential for schools within the same district to have vastly different outcomes, despite the high per-student spending at Grantosa Drive, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be enough to drive improvement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
